2nd Prize Of ‘OPPO’ LED Competition

Pieces 30 lamp is a LED lamp designed for young generation in China. Since lots of young people living in big cities have to rent a compact apartment after graduating and need to move house when needed, our design group aimed to design a lamp that can be easily assembled and carried and that can be used in a small rented space. We also want to invent a new interactive way between human and lamp by using LED technology. We expected to bring more emotional design to this everyday life action.


We invented this polyhedral LED lamp. People can flip once on one face to turn only this face on or flip twice on any face to turn the whole lamp on. In this way, the lamp can illuminate towards different directions so that it can satisfy different illumination conditions. We utilized the features of LED technology, such as small and portable size and its sturdy form.

RESEARCH

Mr. and Mrs Wang are friends of us. Like most of other young people, they cannot afford their own flat in metropolis. They live in a rented apartment in downtown Shanghai. We observed their home and their behavior interacting with lights.


In the end, we found that there are 3 crucial aspects involved in the connection between lights and people: Space, Time and Activities.


Space

We found the most embarrassed situation happens when people are in the main bedroom because of the relative dim illumination of the droplight. Because of the small size of rented apartment, people's activies are limited in a relative small space, so more lighting modes are demanded in the main room.



Time

After working hours, they share the same room for most of the time when they are at home. Some problem occurs. For example, when both of them have the demand for study, the desk lamp cannot satisfy them together.



We also studied the features of LED. We found that they own many advantages comparing to traditional lights, such as longevity, small size, luminance regulation and sturdy quality. So our opportunies is to take advantage of LED’s merits to invent a new product with new interacting way. We also expect to satisfy young people’s demand of diverse illumination conditions in tiny rented house.


CONCEPT

Different Direction: This design can cleverly solve the problem showed in the analysis that most droplights have dim diffused illumination. With this design, more concentrated ray will contribute to more efficient usage.


New Interactive Way: Direct interaction with lights is a more interesting way. Not like droplights, flicking the faces of lights we can reach is more effective and allow people sense their interaction with this appliance.


Applied LED Features: The feasibility of this design benefit from LED and its controllable luminance.


Energy Saving: Choosing the faces you need instead of turning on the whole light can help save energy. Sometimes, users just need functional or atmospheric illumination while reading or playing iPad. In these cases, one or two faces with right directions is sufficient.


DESIGN PROCESS



REFLECTION

When looking back on this project, I find that new interaction mode might be developed from this design. In traditional ways, switch serves as the intermedia between people and lights. However, in this project, people can turn up the lights by interacting with lights directly. This is a new way can be both interesting and effective.


With this new way, designers can turn furnitures or portion of them into lights, such as one face of a desk. It could be a new thought of modern furniture design pattern. For instance, the picture on the right shows an embedded closet with 2 washing machines. People need to work under light to ensure their activity. In this situation, a light top panel can be turned on by flicking itself will be effective and impressive.
